Created to stand watch and ensure the safety of the Holy Father and his residence, the Pontifical Swiss Guard is the world’s oldest active permanent military corps. Founded by Pope Julius II on January 22, 1506, it is made up of 135 voluntary Swiss citizens of Catholic faith, serving directly under the Supreme Pontiff.
The relationship between Tenuta San Giorgio and the Pontifical Swiss Guard began in 2010, with the release of the 2005 vintage of Ugolforte. A shared set of values – along with the symbolism of Saint George himself, a figure of virtue and courage, of good triumphing over evil – led to San Giorgio being chosen as an official supplier to the Pontifical Swiss Guard.
Since then, the estate has produced a special selection of wines dedicated to the Corps – a tribute to key moments in its history, reserved for official events and Pontifical Swiss Guards’ celebrations.
